Man creates frozen Rainbow

Rivesville , WEST VIRGINIA – One man in West Virginia
turned 20-foot icicles into a frozen rainbow, bringing wonder
to those weary of the wicked winter weather.

Rich DeMary, 43, added food color to water. He carried the
gallon jugs to icicles hanging over a highway. He tossed the
red, orange, green, and blue dyes onto the icicles. The dyes
froze almost instantly, transforming the icy daggers into a
dazzling display of colorful creativity.

A creative man in West Virginia poured gallons of water dyed with
food coloring over these icicles to create a frozen rainbow.

“People tell me that when they turn the corner, they see
this colorful thing, and they love it. I do it to make people
smile and brighten their day,” said DeMary. He owns a
family grocery store and is a weight-lifter. Now, he’s lifting
the spirits of the whole town.

Each winter for the past five years, DeMary has spent about
$200 on food coloring. He touches up his handiwork often.
“So many people complain about the weather,” he said.
“There’s a lot you can do if you use some imagination.”

Let’s talk

• Share what you know about friends or relatives
battling winter weather in areas around the U.S.

• What do you like the least or most about this winter?

• What are some things you can do to brighten
a dreary winter day?

Hey, try this!

Add some food dye to water and freeze in ice-cube trays
overnight. Place a piece of paper on a cookie sheet, and
let the frozen cubes slip around, creating a colorful collage.
When it dries, write a poem on your paper about making
wonders out of woe.
