Birmingham, ALABAMA – Imagine finding out you have a serious
disease. Shooting hoops with the guys or giggling with friends at
Girl Scouts is replaced by countless doctor visits. These sick
children must bravely face a frightening future.
Magic Moments in Birmingham helps children with serious diseases
experience childhood joy. They take sick children’s wishes and turn
them into “magic moments.” They grant about 20 wishes a month.
More than 3,500 children have had wishes granted since Magic
Moments began in 1984.
“A magic moment can be almost anything – a vacation, a shopping
spree, a laptop computer, a puppy, a life-size dollhouse, or even
meeting their favorite celebrity,” said Pam Jones, executive director
of Magic Moments.
In May of 2006, Trevor Stapp, 9, was diagnosed with leukemia.
His wish was to go to Disney World. In January, he and his family
arrived in the Magic Kingdom. “I liked the big, fast rides and petting
the stingrays, the best,” Trevor said.
“I think Magic Moments gives kids with bad diseases something to
be cheerful about,” Trevor said. “If I knew other kids with bad diseases,
I would tell them how great my trip was.” Trevor is now back in school.
“We exist solely to bring a smile to the face of a child who has a life-
threatening illness,” said Jones. “While we cannot cure an illness,
we can make dreams come true for children who have been
deprived of a normal childhood.”
Kids, you can help raise money to make
magic moments for ill
children. Some
children set up lemonade stands, others
sell cookies.
In Birmingham, six girls turned their
birthdays into one dance and
raised more than $2,000!
