Artists color war-torn Iraq

Baghdad, IRAQ
AP Images

This ark is made to resemble Noah’s ark in the Bible
story in the book of Genesis.

Baghdad, IRAQ – Amid sirens, gunfire, and the constant fear
of bomb attacks, 80 artists are attempting to bring joy to Baghdad.
The painters – Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds – from all over Iraq have
united to paint the city’s concrete blast walls with splashes of color
in peaceful, happy scenery.

The dull gray, concrete walls were built to protect markets, people,
and buildings from car bombs and other attacks, which occur frequently
in Baghdad and other parts of Iraq.

One of the artists, Talib Muhsin, graduated from Iraq’s College of
Fine Arts in 1987. Muhsin spoke about the project: “This exhibit has
two goals: the first one is that we are trying to help Iraqis coexist with
these concrete barriers and accept them in their lives – at least for
the time being.

“The second one is that we Iraqi artists wanted to say that Iraqis
are like others who love peace and want to get rid of this situation
to live normal life.”

Some of the scenes have palm groves, birds, and camels, while
other scenes are right out of history.

Iraqi residents have mixed feelings about the murals. Some say the
addition of color to the concrete barriers will not change their difficult
lives. Others believe the decorations will brighten the hearts of those
who stop to watch the blending of colors by a blended group of
Iraqi artists.
